A customer came to us with a BMW 6 Series GT that had already had its electric steering rack replaced with a used part elsewhere, without solving the problem: the behaviour stayed irregular and some functions did not respond as expected.
Why replacement alone is often not enough
The electric steering rack talks to other control units (stability, driving assistance) and stores parameters tied to the vehicle it came from. Fitting a used part without aligning it to the car leaves the system with inconsistent data: that is the source of the unusual behaviour the customer kept noticing.
The solution: reprogramming and recoding
We checked the real condition of the component, then reprogrammed the module and recoded it on the vehicle, so the parameters matched this car exactly rather than the one the part came from.
The result
After the work the steering responded smoothly again, the warning lights went off, and the related functions (driving assistance, self-centring) worked correctly again.
