Modern BMW and MINI cars are governed by many control units that communicate with each other. When it comes to working on the software, two terms are often confused: coding and programming.
What coding is
Coding changes the configuration of a module already present in the vehicle: it tells the control unit which functions to use and how to behave according to the car's equipment. It is what is needed, for example, after replacing a component or to enable certain supported functions.
What programming is
Programming loads new software into the module, for example for an update or after replacing a control unit. It is a more delicate operation and requires a correct procedure and, in general, a stable supply voltage during the work.
When they are needed
- after replacing a module or a control unit;
- after a retrofit, that is, adding an accessory or a system that was not fitted originally;
- for software updates, when they are necessary and compatible;
- to customise some comfort functions, where the vehicle allows it.
Not everything is possible
The functions that can be enabled depend on model, year, hardware and equipment. If a physical component is not present or not compatible, coding alone is not enough. That is why, before any work, we check what the vehicle supports.
