On BMW models with xDrive all-wheel drive, the transfer case distributes drive between the axles. When something is wrong, the driver notices it above all during manoeuvres: full steering lock, parking, slow bends.
Typical symptoms
- jerking or juddering at low speed with the steering turned;
- vibrations during acceleration;
- noises from the central part of the car;
- 4x4 or DSC warning lights on the instrument panel;
- irregular behaviour of the drive.
It is not always the transfer case
Before blaming the transfer case, other possible causes must be checked:
- tyres with different wear or different sizes between the axles: a difference in circumference can make the system work badly;
- errors stored in the control unit;
- condition and level of the oil;
- the transfer case actuator;
- other components of the drivetrain.
How we proceed
We start by reading the errors and checking the tyres. Then the actuator and the drivetrain are checked, and where provided, adaptations and calibrations are carried out. If the cause is the transfer case, repair or replacement is assessed.
How to avoid the problem
Fit identical tyres on all four wheels, replace them together and check the pressure regularly. A small neglected defect can put stress on the drivetrain.
