The automatic gearbox in BMW and MINI cars is prized for its smoothness and quick shifts. Like any mechanical component, though, it needs care: the most debated question is changing the oil.
Lifetime oil: what it really means
Some owner's manuals describe the gearbox oil as "lubricated for life". This refers to the service life expected by the manufacturer under ideal conditions, and it is often tied to the warranty period. In real use, with heavy traffic, towing, sporty driving or hot climates, the oil degrades and loses its properties. That is why many specialists recommend a preventive change at regular intervals, to be assessed according to the model and how the car is used.
Signs of a struggling gearbox
- Delayed or harsh shifts, jerking while driving
- Noises or vibrations in the low gears
- Error messages on the dashboard or emergency (limp) mode
- Oil leaks under the car
How the work is done
The change requires a precise procedure: controlled oil temperature, the correct quantity and specification, a new filter where fitted, and then resetting the adaptation values through diagnostics. Work done without the right equipment can be ineffective or even harmful.
