Seeing a warning light come on in the dashboard is always a moment of worry. In modern BMW and MINI cars the warnings are numerous and they are not all equally serious. Knowing how to read them helps you decide whether you can carry on with your journey or it is better to stop.
The colour makes the difference
- Steady yellow or orange light: it indicates a fault that needs attention but normally not an immediate danger. Have the car checked within a few days.
- Flashing light: it signals a serious problem, often related to combustion. Reduce the load straight away and drive carefully to the workshop.
- Red light: it means you should stop as soon as it is safe to do so (oil pressure, temperature, brakes).
The most common causes
An engine light can depend on many factors: faulty sensors, worn coils or spark plugs, leaks in the intake system, problems with the exhaust or the fuel supply. That is why the fault code alone is not enough: it is the clue to start from, not the diagnosis.
What not to do
- Don't clear the error with a cheap reader and keep driving: the problem will come back.
- Don't ignore a flashing light thinking it will go away by itself.
- Don't replace parts by trial and error based on online searches.
