A customer reported a problem that was as annoying as it was unusual: in their BMW, warm air only came out on the driver's side, while the passenger side stayed cold no matter how the controls were set.
The symptom: two temperatures in one cabin
The dual-zone climate control regulates the two halves of the cabin separately by mixing warm and cold air through internal flaps. When one of these no longer responds to commands, the result is exactly this: half the car warm, half cold.
The diagnosis
Checking the actuators and the climate control units found the fault in the unit that regulates air mixing on the passenger side: the component was no longer receiving the command, or was not executing it correctly.
The solution
Once the faulty component was replaced and the system's calibration restored, the climate control went back to correctly regulating both sides of the cabin independently, as intended.
